The Concept
Inspired by the experience of meeting diverse people while studying abroad, this project explores a central question: can we know someone by their core essence, without any background information? This work translates the narratives of three anonymous individuals into an abstract, interactive environment. The result, built on New Art City, is an immersive space for reflection on empathy and the limits of understanding.
My Role & Contribution
As a selected artist for the Hybrid Realities Lab, I was responsible for my project from concept to final execution. It included conducting all in-depth qualitative interviews, developing the conceptual framework of using AI as an 'interpretive intermediary,' generating all 3D assets and textures with Midjourney and DALL-E, and building the final interactive environment in the New Art City platform.
The Process
This project was developed within the structured, nine-week Hybrid Realities Lab. The lab's framework included weekly dialogue sessions on digital art practices, guest talks from artists, and intensive group critiques that helped shape the project's conceptual direction. My personal process within this environment began with extensive interviews to gather narratives, which were then translated into visual assets using AI tools.
Challenge & Solution
ChallengeMy central challenge was how to visualize someone else's personal story without overpowering it with my own artistic style. I could have used software to create precise images based on my own interpretation,
but I felt that would not truly capture the project's theme of anonymity.
SolutionI chose to use AI as a creative collaborator. I translated the interview narratives into text prompts,
intentionally placing the AI as an intermediary between the original story and the final image.
The resulting visuals are a collaboration between the participant's words,
the AI's unique interpretation, and my final curation.
Key Takeaways
This project was a profound exploration of my role as a 'translator' in the age of AI.
It taught me that using AI isn't about giving up control, but about engaging in a new kind of creative dialogue.
I learned that AI can be a powerful tool to explore themes of interpretation and the beautiful mystery of others,
a concept I am eager to continue exploring.
