The Concept
A generative artwork created during a hands-on workshop at DAT Fest 2025.
Titled 'Organism,' this experiment explores how real-time hand tracking can be used to create organic, responsive visual forms in TouchDesigner. The goal was to create a direct, intuitive connection between human gesture and a digital lifeform.
Technical Implementation
This was my first project implementing hand tracking for interaction within TouchDesigner.
Using a webcam and Mediapipe, the system tracks the position and gesture of the user's hand. I then used this data in TouchDesigner to control the parameters of a generative particle system, making the 'organism' on screen appear to grow, move, and react to the hand's presence.
Key Takeaways
The main takeaway from this intensive workshop was gaining practical insight into how leading creative studios use tools like TouchDesigner for real-world installations. Successfully implementing hand tracking for the first time was a major step for me, solidifying my interest in creating more physical and embodied interactive systems that move beyond the mouse and keyboard.
